Hubris is a striking, life-sized mixed media sculpture that explores the precarious boundary between human ambition and self-destruction. Inspired by the classical myth of Icarus, this fragmented, headless male torso captures a moment frozen in time whilst unravelling at the peak of its ascent.
I am reimagining a classical figurative sculpture by utilizing an unconventional, contemporary industrial material.
The entire surface of the figure is textured with expansion foam and thermoplastic, coated in a deep, lustrous black finish that seems to mimic the glossy, fluid appearance of crude oil.
The dripping, liquid-like tendrils trailing from the wings and arms seem to be melting away even as the figure strains upward.
It contrasts the heavy, industrial texture of the figure with a weightless, soaring posture.
Ultimately, Hubris serves as a poignant visual commentary on modern society, challenging the viewer to question the true cost of our relentless pursuit of technological advancement and existential reach.
